Physical Education
At Hassocks Infants School we aim to instil a love for physical activity in every child. We strive to promote lifelong habits of exercise, healthy living and well-being - tools for life that children can take with them as they grow. Our passionate approach teaches our children a full, progressive and well-rounded curriculum. By the time the children leave us for Year 3 they will have embedded the qualities of resilience, sportsmanship, and how to be a team player. Our children will have learnt a breadth of skills, rules and tactics. They will have learnt to celebrate their own successes graciously, celebrate each other's successes kindly, and develop their own resilience; through overcoming setbacks.
Our approach:
Within each school year we host a diverse range of events and incentives for all children to participate in as well as our PE curriculum:
Bi-weekly lessons cover a broad and progressive curriculum, including gymnastics, dance, ball skills, playground games, athletics, invasion games, fitness, striking and fielding and tennis. From Reception to Year 2, children learn simple ball skills from throwing and catching, which progress to playing tactical invasion games including netball, basketball, rugby, football and handball.
Our staff receive weekly professional development training from our external sports specialists, JASC Coaching, which enhances all our teachers' abilities to inspire and teach physical lessons effectively.
The children are exposed to an increasing level of safe competition as they progress through school, competing in inter-form competitions, progressing to inter-school competitions and ending each academic year with a very exciting sports day!
Children are taught to learn the value of winning and losing. We celebrate our own and each other's achievements through announcements, trophies and medals. We value these life lessons and support children in how to manage them.
Assessment:
Assessment starts in Reception, where children's fine and gross motor skills are tracked throughout the year. Additional support is in place in line with assessment findings, specifically to help them reach the expected levels for children at the end of the foundation stage for physical development.
Teaching staff work with JASC to assess children's skills and development throughout KS1. Planning is then tailored to meet the learning needs of the children and additional support is given to children requiring it. Children who excel in PE are also challenged and encouraged to push themselves further, within sport as well as through taking on roles such as becoming a sports leader.
Supporting all children:
Our school is dedicated to delivering the best practice for our children to become all-rounded, confident and healthy individuals. Our PE curriculum is varied and progressive, providing a supportive environment that includes every child, whilst challenging them to their full potential. We focus on personal improvement, empowering our pupils to embrace challenges and to keep on trying! We focus on gross and motor skills right from the beginning of our children's journey and key development skills in these areas are assessed and interventions are put in place to give children needing extra support focused tuition. We run smaller group sessions for those with additional needs such as sensory, motor, nurture or emotional. These smaller groups are a safe environment for those who might not naturally participate, to enable them to join in, in a safe and calm environment.
Above and Beyond:
We ensure children are able to take part in competitive events, both in school and across the locality.
In Year 2 the children take part in Sports Day at The Windmills Junior School, where they participate in a progression in track and field events as well as experiencing a fantastic transition day, visiting our main junior school.
The children have the opportunity to become members of the Sports Leadership team, supporting events on the school calendar, promoting sporting events and raising the profile of physical activity around the school.
We value working together as a whole school! Taking part; raising money for our school in events such as 'The mini marathon and the dance-a-thon.'
We offer extra-curricular clubs throughout the week to suit a diverse range of interests, including yoga, multi-sports, football, tennis and dancing. We have links with external providers and work closely with our local community.
Our holistic approach means that we go above and beyond expectations, nurturing children who love to be active and participate. We have invested heavily in ensuring all teachers receive exceptionally high levels of training in how to deliver, assess and develop their own teaching of PE to ensure the children receive the best PE teaching and experience we can give.
